AGM 2020 will be in Cranbrook in May, start working on your resolutions.
This information will guide you through the process…
The Art & Science of the Resolution.
from SCABC AGM 2013 prepared by Barbara A Campbell
Before you put pen to paper Resolution Checklist
- Is this an issue your members (locally, regionally, provincially) want you to address?
- Is this a SCABC issue?
- Is the proposed resolution well researched and well written?
- Is this a new issue that does not conflict with or duplicate existing SCABC policy or a previously approved resolution?
- Do you know how much implementing this resolution will cost?
- Have you built support?
What is a Resolution?
The main motion, in parliamentary procedure, is a motion that brings business before the assembly…a resolution is a “main motion.”
A resolution is a written motion adopted by a deliberative body.
The same rules apply, whether the motion is verbal or written.
The Where’s and Wherefores’ of a Resolution
- The beginning: Whereas clauses of the motion
– Rolling logic?
– Chronological order?
– Top down, larger to smaller? - The punchline: the Therefore be it resolved clause of the motion
— Subject
– Verb
– Object
Simply put, who is doing what to whom?
The who or Subject of the resolution is the SCABC (Senior Citizens of Association of BC)
The what or Verb denotes action (write, lobby, march, petition, advise, campaign, oppose, support).
The to whom or Object of the action (individual, group, internal/external body).
A FINAL WORD BEFORE YOU BEGIN; RESOLUTIONS BECOME BINDING ON THE ASSOCIATION ONCE THEY ARE PASSED.
Now you are ready to take your pen in hand and write your resolution…
Good luck, and remember to enjoy the process.
