Br. 51 Nelson Spring Report 2019

4. Nelson Seniors – Branch 51

NELSON SENIORS BRANCH #51
Report to West Kootenay/Boundary Regional Meeting – Midway, B.C.
April 15, 2019
Senior Citizens Nelson Branch No. 51, to date, has a membership of 71 individuals.
The mornings, at our centre, begin with one or two of the following activities: Tai Chi, Chair
Yoga, Book Club, Chess and or Knitters. The afternoons are busy with our most popular
activities, Bridge and Cribbage, and just recently Scrabble.
The Scrap Bookers and Rug Hookers meet twice a month. Snooker players generally meet in
the evenings. They also held a successful tournament this year.
Our library houses many recent titles donated by members. As well, there is always a puzzle
being assembled.
Branch 51 makes yearly monetary donations to three food banks in Nelson; as well as the
Seniors 55+ BC Games.
This past year we gave our written support for ‘outdoor exercise equipment’ at our Lakeside
Park; and to reinstate Sunday bus service in our town. We made our comments and views
known regarding the legalization of cannabis, and climate action collaborative.
In 2018, we held our annual June Strawberry Tea for 90+ year local residents. Vocalist Bessie
Wapp and Rylan Kewen played guitar. In July we celebrated the 100th birthday for one of our
long-time members. In December a delicious turkey buffet Christmas luncheon was enjoyed at
the Hume Hotel.
This past year we were educated and entertained by several guest speakers who spoke on the
following topics:
• Laughing Yoga
• Cannabis Legalization
• Fire alarms and fire safety
• Fall prevention
• Benefits of Acupuncture
• Canadian Red Cross
Except for July and August, our monthly meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every
month at 10:30 a.m.
Thank you very much
Bev Fischer, President
Senior Citizens Association (Nelson) Branch No. 51
